What is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer?
An AI Forward Deployed Engineer—or AI FDE—works close to the customer, translating real business problems into secure, usable AI systems.
What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?
The role combines technical discovery, software and data engineering, applied AI, deployment, and client communication. Instead of receiving perfectly defined requirements, an FDE helps define the problem, tests possible solutions, integrates the right systems, and supports the product in a real customer environment.
Core AI FDE responsibilities
- Interview stakeholders and define measurable business outcomes.
- Investigate data quality, systems, APIs, security requirements, and constraints.
- Prototype AI workflows using retrieval, language models, business rules, and tools.
- Build integrations and production services with Python, SQL, and APIs.
- Deploy, monitor, evaluate, troubleshoot, and improve the solution.
- Explain architecture and tradeoffs to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
